Frequently Asked Questions
Wedding Bagpiper FAQs Northern Ireland | Piper For Hire NI
📍 Location & Availability
Q: Do you cover all of Northern Ireland?
A: Yes, absolutely. There are no extra travel fees anywhere in Northern Ireland. With a trusted network of pipers strategically based across the country, we can serve every venue from Belfast to the North Coast, and Derry to the Mournes. This ensures you get a dedicated professional for your wedding.
Q: Do you travel outside NI?
A: Yes. Our NI team will often cover the Irish border counties; Donegal, Monaghan, Cavan, Louth and Meath (a small mileage/travel fee may apply). For venues in the rest of the Republic of Ireland, our sister company, Piper For Hire Ireland, is delighted to assist you.
Q: How far in advance should we book?
A: We can often accommodate late or last-minute bookings – so even if your wedding is coming up soon, it’s always worth asking!
That said, we recommend booking as early as possible – ideally 1 to 2 years in advance – especially for peak dates such as Fridays and Saturdays in summer.
We’re happy to take bookings up to 4 years ahead, and booking early gives you peace of mind that your date is secured at today’s rate.
🎶 About the Piper & Performances
Q: What does a piper do at a wedding?
A: A piper can add impact, atmosphere and tradition at almost every stage of your day. Over nearly 30 years, we’ve refined exactly where the bagpipes work best — and where less is more.
Some of the most popular moments include:
• Welcoming guests as they arrive for the ceremony.
• Playing the bride down the aisle (processional) and/or leading the couple out at the end (recessional).
• Performing a short recital after the ceremony — perfect for guests to enjoy, for photos with the piper and for the newlyweds to see the piper in action.
• Greeting guests at the reception venue, setting the tone as they arrive.
• Leading the top table entrance, creating a powerful and memorable moment at the start of the meal.
All of our Core Performances and Wedding Experience Packages are built around these highlights, so you get the best value and the right balance of music throughout your day.
Q: What’s your most popular package?
A: Our most popular Wedding Experience Package is The Celebration Journey (Our Full-Day Signature Experience), while our most popular Core Performance is The Classic Ceremony Welcome. A new and rising favourite for the Drinks Reception is The Wee Hooley — a lively two-piece featuring pipes, guitar, whistles, and Smallpipes, designed especially for this part of the day.
Q: How long will the piper play for at my wedding?
A: After nearly 30 years of performing at weddings, we’ve learned exactly when pipers work best — and when they are less effective. Many couples initially over-estimate how long they’ll need. However, the truth is that concentrating too much playing in one performance can reduce its impact.
That’s why our packages are carefully structured to deliver maximum impact at the right moments. The two favourites our couples choose most often are:
• The Celebration Journey (Our Full-Day Signature Experience) – our most popular Wedding Experience Package. It weaves piping seamlessly throughout your day, from the ceremony welcome, through the reception, right up to your grand entrance. It captures every highlight where a piper truly shines, without overwhelming your guests or diluting the magic.
• The Classic Ceremony Welcome – our most popular core performance. Up to 45 minutes as guests arrive, plus a short 10–15 minute recital after your ceremony as guests exit. This gives your guests the perfect chance to get a photo with the piper and ensures the newlyweds also get to enjoy the performance — something many brides used to say they missed when arriving directly by car for the ceremony. Includes the option to add your aisle music (processional and/or recessional) at no extra charge.
Other popular options include:
• The Reception Welcome – up to 1 hour of piping as guests arrive at your reception venue.
• The Top Table Grand Entrance – a dramatic entrance moment, plus short celebratory pieces.
It’s rare that our carefully designed packages won’t suit the flow of your day, but where you have a unique vision, we’ll always discuss what’s possible — though sometimes certain ideas aren’t well suited to bagpipes or can lessen their impact.
👉 These are just some examples — for our complete range of packages, including The Wee Hooley, trio upgrades, and our full Wedding Experience Packages, see our brochure at [website link].
Q: Can I walk down the aisle to a bagpipe tune?
A: Absolutely! This is included in both The Classic Ceremony Welcome and our most popular Wedding Experience Package — The Celebration Journey (Our Full-Day Signature Experience). The piper can play for the processional (entrance), recessional (exit), or both — all at no extra charge. With The Celebration Journey, this is just one of many highlights automatically covered as part of your full-day experience.
Q: Can the piper play during the signing of the register?
A: A Highland piper can perform for a few minutes in a very large space like an old church or cathedral, but they would be overwhelmingly loud in a small ceremony room for the entire duration of the signing of the register. For this reason, we recommend the quieter Scottish Smallpipes for this part of the day. Their beautiful, gentle sound creates the perfect soundtrack for this intimate and emotional moment. Available to book separately with select pipers.
Q: Can I book the piper for my Drinks Reception?
A: A solo piper isn’t suitable for a full Drinks Reception — two hours of Highland pipes indoors would be overwhelming for your guests and it would quickly lose its impact.
Instead, we recommend The Wee Hooley: a duo specifically designed for this part of your day. It features Highland pipes used sparingly for exciting moments, while quieter Scottish Smallpipes, whistles, and guitar create the perfect sociable atmosphere while you’re away having photos taken. Your guests get the best of both worlds — the thrill of the pipes when it matters, plus beautiful background music that lets them actually talk to each other.
Q: Can the piper play indoors?
A: Yes, often – though it depends on the space. Bagpipes sound incredible in larger venues such as churches, chapels, cathedrals, or function rooms with high ceilings, where the acoustics really let the music shine.
In smaller or more enclosed settings, the volume can sometimes be a little overpowering, particularly for young children or older guests. In those cases, we’ll guide you on the best approach – whether that’s the piper performing just outside the room so the music carries in beautifully, switching to our Scottish Smallpipes for a gentler sound, or creating a more intimate atmosphere indoors with our popular Wee Hooley experience.
Q: What happens if the weather is bad?
A: We’re fully prepared to play in the rain – that’s part of piping life in Northern Ireland. If conditions become more severe, we’ll work with you and your venue to adapt, whether that means moving to a covered outdoor spot or an indoor location. Either way, you can be confident the music will still go ahead.
Q: What does the piper wear?
A: All our pipers wear a traditional kilt along with smart Highland attire as standard. The look is formal, respectful and well-suited to weddings and special occasions.
Q. What types of weddings do you perform at?
A: We proudly perform at weddings of all kinds — across all cultures, faiths, and traditions (and none). Whether your celebration is religious, secular, same-sex, interfaith, or something entirely your own, you’re in safe hands.
Q: Do you only perform at weddings?
A: Not at all. We also provide pipers for funerals, birthdays, anniversaries, corporate events, and special occasions throughout Northern Ireland. Just tell us what you’re planning, and we’ll recommend the right package.
🎵 Music Choices
Q: Can I choose the tunes?
A: Absolutely. We’ll provide you with our repertoire guide featuring traditional Scottish and Irish music, carefully curated from nearly 30 years and hundreds of weddings. You can select your favourites from this proven collection, or if you prefer, simply tell us the mood you’re after and trust our expertise to choose pieces that will create those perfect moments.
We focus primarily on traditional repertoire as bagpipes are limited to just 9 notes, while a piano has 88 keys and a guitar can access 70+ notes. This means most modern pop songs can’t be played accurately. However, we’re happy to attempt custom arrangements for a non-refundable Custom Tune Arrangement fee, though we can’t guarantee the results due to these instrument limitations.
Q: Can I request a modern or non-traditional tune?
A: Sometimes. It’s important to understand the unique limitations of the bagpipes. Unlike a piano with 88 keys or a guitar with 70+ notes, the Great Highland Bagpipes are limited to just 9 notes in a single scale. This means that while some contemporary tunes might work, many popular songs and melodies are impossible to play correctly.
You may have seen videos of pipers playing pop tunes online. These often involve short snippets, pre-recorded backing tracks, or even electronic bagpipes. As professional, acoustic pipers, our focus is on pieces that truly shine on the instrument. With almost 30 years of experience, we find that traditional Scottish and Irish music consistently creates the most powerful and emotional moments.
We’re happy to attempt a special request, but please note that a non-refundable Custom Tune Arrangement fee applies and we cannot guarantee the musical quality or success of the piece. Our professional advice is to choose from our proven repertoire, which has been carefully curated from hundreds of weddings.
Q: Can your pipers play along to backing tracks or recorded music?
A: We don’t recommend this approach. Bagpipes are notoriously difficult to synchronise with recordings due to tuning variations, volume levels, and timing challenges. If something goes wrong on your wedding day, it could be quite noticeable. That said, if you’re absolutely set on this route and won’t be devastated if it doesn’t work perfectly, we can attempt it. In this case, we’d strongly encourage you to book your piper for a wedding rehearsal to practice with your sound system beforehand. Just be aware that we cannot guarantee the outcome or offer refunds if the performance doesn’t go as planned. Send us the exact track you have in mind and we’ll get your piper’s honest opinion on whether it’s achievable.
🧩 Packages & Flexibility
Q: What if my specific requirements aren’t covered by your standard packages?
A: If you have something in mind that isn’t listed in our packages, please get in touch and we’ll be happy to discuss how we can accommodate your vision. After nearly 30 years of performing at weddings, we’ve learned exactly when pipers work best — and when they are less effective. Many couples initially over-estimate how long they’ll need. However, the truth is that concentrating too much playing in one performance can reduce its impact.
That’s why our packages are carefully structured to deliver maximum impact at the right moments. We’ll happily advise on the best fit for your day, and if needed, we can explore custom arrangements — though most couples find that our popular package options already cover everything they’re looking for.
Q: I only need a piper for 15 minutes – can I book just that?
We don’t offer bookings priced strictly by the minute. Every wedding performance involves the same preparation and commitment – from travel and coordination to tuning, and even the uniform, which can take the piper as long to put on as it does the groom to get ready!
If you only want a single highlight, our Symbolic Ceremony – Single Cue covers one ceremony moment (e.g., a mini guest-arrival prelude, aisle in, recessional, or a short post-ceremony photo recital).
However, most couples who want the piper to shape the atmosphere choose the Classic Ceremony Welcome – up to 45 minutes of arrivals ambience (not just a short prelude), optional aisle music (no extra cost) for processional and/or recessional, and a short post-ceremony photo recital so everyone actually hears the music and captures photos.
In short: Single Cue = one moment; Classic Ceremony Welcome = full ceremony coverage.
Q: Can I add another performance later?
A: Yes – many couples decide to add an extra performance as their plans take shape, and you’re welcome to do so at any time. However, availability can’t be guaranteed, so it’s always best to let us know as early as possible. This gives the best chance of securing your piper for the additional performance, and also locks in today’s pricing before any future increases.
Q: Can I make changes to my package, or downgrade later?
A: We understand wedding plans can evolve. You’re always welcome to upgrade or add performances at any stage (subject to availability), and many couples move into a Wedding Experience Package as their plans develop.
Once a package is confirmed, however, we aren’t able to offer downgrades or partial cancellations. This is because your piper’s time is reserved exclusively for you, and we turn away other couples for that date.
We recommend choosing the package that feels like the best fit for your full day from the outset — you’ll have the flexibility to enhance it later, but not to reduce it.
🛡️ Quality & Reliability
Q: Can I hear the piper before booking?
A: Absolutely. While we don’t arrange in-person auditions, you can hear our pipers through videos that showcase the quality of our performances. These give you a genuine sense of the sound and atmosphere we create.
We regularly receive last-minute calls from couples who have been let down by pipers they found elsewhere — often just a day or two before the wedding. In most cases, the issue is lack of wedding experience, nerves, or simply not having the skill to deliver at such an important occasion. The reality is that not everyone who owns bagpipes can provide a professional wedding performance.
Brian Reynolds, our founder and a former All-Ireland Champion, personally handpicks and vets every piper on our team for their musical ability, presentation, and professionalism. Any piper we assign will either have competed at the top competition grades — including current and former World Champions — or have many years of professional wedding experience. Several are full-time career musicians, respected within the piping world.
On top of that, our strict booking and coordination process means everything is confirmed in writing, overseen by Brian, and relayed to your assigned piper — so you’ll never face the uncertainty that can come with a casual arrangement.
This means you can book with complete confidence, knowing your piper will be a highly skilled professional who delivers exceptional sound on your big day.
Q: How do I know my piper will definitely turn up?
A: Sadly, the biggest complaint we hear from couples who come to us at the last minute is that their piper — often a one-person operation, or a well-meaning friend or family member — has let them down just before the wedding. Every year we receive anxious calls from brides, grooms, venues, funeral directors, and even government agencies who’ve been left in an impossible situation.
As professional musicians, we find this behaviour deeply frustrating — it lets down not only the client but the entire piping fraternity. It’s why we exist. We’re Northern Ireland’s only dedicated bagpiping agency, not a one-person operation. Every booking is confirmed in writing, overseen by our founder Brian Reynolds, and backed by our trusted network of professional pipers.
In nearly 30 years, we have never once cancelled a wedding due to illness or emergency — and with our network in place, you can book with confidence.
Q: What if my piper is ill on the day?
A: In nearly 30 years, we’ve never had to cancel a wedding due to illness — even during Covid. That said, we always plan for every eventuality. Unlike a one-person operation or hobbyist, we’re the only dedicated bagpiping agency in Northern Ireland with a trusted network of professional pipers.
If your assigned piper became unavailable due to illness or emergency, we would immediately seek to provide a replacement of the same high standard. On exceptionally busy peak dates where all our pipers are already booked, we’d do everything possible to get you covered through our extended network of contacts. Since many solo pipers and hobbyists actually refer their overflow bookings to us throughout the year, we have strong professional relationships across the industry. In the highly unlikely event that no cover is possible, you would receive a full refund (though no further compensation is possible). With this safety net, you can book with complete confidence knowing your music is in the safest hands.
Q: Can I have the piper’s contact number to deal with them directly?
A: To keep communication clear and streamlined, all enquiries and arrangements go through our founder and coordinator, Brian Reynolds.
Brian is a former All-Ireland Champion bagpiper with nearly 30 years of experience performing and coordinating weddings, including high-profile events. He now focuses solely on coordination to ensure everything you agree upon is clearly communicated and delivered by your assigned piper.
In most cases, there’s no need to contact the piper directly. This approach means you always have one clear, experienced point of contact throughout your planning.
Q: Will the piper attend rehearsals?
A: Generally, the piper does not attend rehearsals as they are usually not required. However, if you have a bespoke ceremony or specific cues you want to run through, your piper can, subject to availability, attend your rehearsal as an optional add-on for an additional fee. This provides an opportunity to walk through entrances, cue points, and timing to ensure everything runs smoothly on your big day. Please let us know during booking if this might be helpful for you.
💳 Booking & Payment
Q: How do I book?
A: Our booking process is simple:
1. Choose Your Package: Explore our packages and prices within our brochure to find your perfect fit.
2. Contact Us: Once you have a package in mind, get in touch with your wedding date, venue, and chosen package. We’ll then confirm availability for you.
3. Secure Your Date: A small £75 deposit locks in your booking.
4. Final Payment: The remaining balance is due one calendar month before your wedding.
Q: What are your payment terms?
A: We require a £75 deposit to secure your booking (or you can pay in full if you prefer). The remaining balance is due in one payment anytime up to one month before your wedding day. We keep things simple with just these two payment options.
Q: Is my booking secure once I pay the deposit?
A: Yes, absolutely. Once we receive your deposit, your wedding date is secured, your piper is assigned, and your price is locked in regardless of any future rate changes.
Q: When do I need to pay the remaining balance?
A: The remaining balance is due anytime up to one month before your wedding date. This gives you flexibility to pay when it suits you – whether that’s immediately after booking, a few months ahead, or right at the one-month deadline.
Q: Will my price change after I book?
A: No — your price is locked in the moment you book. By booking early, you secure your package at the current rate, protecting you from any future price increases. Please note that this works both ways: confirmed bookings cannot be adjusted retrospectively for any future discounts or new packages we may introduce.
📜 Terms & Policies
Q: What happens if I need to cancel or postpone my wedding booking?
A: Your £75 deposit is non-refundable. Once your date is secured, we reserve that slot exclusively for you and turn away other couples.
If a cancellation or postponement happens within six months of your wedding, the full balance of your booking will be due. Unfortunately, at shorter notice it is very unlikely that your piper will be able to re-fill the date, which would otherwise mean a complete loss of income.
We always recommend taking out wedding insurance, which can give you peace of mind should unexpected circumstances arise.
